Who WHC is
WHC — short for Web Hosting Canada — is a hosting company headquartered in Montreal, Quebec. It sells the full range you would expect from a mid-sized host: shared web hosting, managed WordPress hosting, reseller hosting, Canadian VPS and dedicated servers, domain registration (including .ca), business email, SSL certificates and a website builder. The site and support run in both English and French, which matters more than it sounds if you have customers or staff in Quebec.
What sets it apart from most of the hosts you see advertised is simple: it is a Canadian-based company hosting in Canada. Many of the big names that rank for “web hosting Canada” are American or international companies that either have no Canadian servers at all or offer one Canadian location as an option. If keeping your site and email on Canadian soil is part of why you are shopping, WHC starts with that box already ticked.
Where your website and email live
WHC describes its hosting as running on “100% Canadian datacenters,” with locations on both the East and West coasts. It does not publish the exact facilities on its main pages, so if you need that level of detail for a contract or a privacy assessment, ask its sales team in writing before you sign up — a good host will answer that question plainly.
Whether you actually need Canadian hosting is a separate question, and the honest answer for most small businesses is “it helps, but it is rarely a legal requirement.” I cover that in detail in Canadian data residency: does your website actually need Canadian hosting? For public bodies, health and education, or any business that has promised customers their data stays in Canada, it becomes much more important.
The plans in plain English
Prices below are as listed on whc.ca on October 31, 2026, in Canadian dollars per month. Like nearly every host, WHC advertises a much lower introductory rate when you prepay a year or more, and the regular rate applies on renewal. Always compare the regular price — that is what you will pay from year two onward.
Shared web hosting
- Go (listed regular price C$9.99/month): one website, one email account with 1 GB of storage, a limit of 50 outgoing emails per hour, and backups up to 10 GB. Fine for a single brochure site whose email lives elsewhere; tight if you want several mailboxes on your own domain.
- Pro (C$14.99/month): unlimited websites and mailboxes (2 GB each), backups up to 25 GB, more server resources, and a free domain registration or transfer for the first year when you prepay annually. This is the plan most small businesses should start with.
- Enterprise (C$25.50/month): more resources again, 5 GB per mailbox and backups up to 50 GB, for busier sites or several sites on one account.
Managed WordPress hosting
- WP Go (C$11.99/month): 10 GB of storage, about 25,000 visitors a month, daily backups with one-click restore and automatic WordPress updates.
- WP Pro (C$16.99/month): 25 GB, about 100,000 visitors a month, and adds one-click staging and a content delivery network.
- WP Beast (C$28.50/month): 50 GB and about 500,000 visitors a month.
All WordPress plans list LiteSpeed caching and free assisted migration from your current host. Every hosting plan includes a free SSL certificate and free website migration, and WHC offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can move a site over and still change your mind.
Read this before you buy
None of these are red flags — they are the normal fine print of shared hosting — but they are the details that are easiest to miss on a pricing page:
- “Unlimited” means normal small-business use. WHC says so in its own footnote. Unlimited storage and traffic are governed by an acceptable use policy, which is standard across the industry.
- Renewal price is the real price. The introductory rate only applies to the first term. Budget for the regular rate.
- The free domain needs a prepaid year. It covers one registration or transfer for common extensions, including .ca.
- Backups have a size cap per plan. Included backups are welcome, but keep your own off-site copy as well. My guide to website backups explains why.
- Watch the email limits on the entry plan. One mailbox and 50 emails an hour is enough for a contact form, not for a team.
Support
WHC offers support by live chat, phone (including a toll-free line) and a help centre, in English and French, and advertises 24/7 availability. As I wrote in how to choose a Canadian web host, the best way to judge support is to test it before you pay: open a pre-sales chat, ask a real question about migrating your site or restoring a backup, and see how quickly and clearly a person answers.
Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere
A good fit: Canadian small businesses, non-profits and freelancers who want their site and email hosted in Canada, prefer to be billed in Canadian dollars, value bilingual support, and want a straightforward cPanel-style shared plan or managed WordPress without paying premium-host prices.
Look elsewhere if: you need a specific named data centre written into a contract and cannot get it confirmed, you are running a high-traffic store that needs dedicated resources (look at its VPS line or a specialist host instead), or you would rather hand the whole job — updates, security, backups and fixes — to one person who knows your site. That last option is fully managed hosting, which I explain in managed vs shared hosting.
